Message ;-) Can find it in most any paint book and I'm sure online as well.

Color perception is a function of light reflection, so even though color may be EXACTLY the same, it can appear different depending on how the light is bouncing off the surface. Metallic paints are very difficult to blend because of the way the flake goes down. The flakes are like tiny mirrors that orient on the surface dependent on how the paint is sprayed. When blending they can leave a halo or penumbra where it looks different than the surrounding area, because the light bounces at different angles on adjacent areas. When making repairs this is often not visible until after the clear goes down and sometimes seen only in certain lighting conditions.

Even though the gun should be held close to 90 degree to the surface when painting, the geometry of the spray pattern mean that most of the material actually comes out at an angle (all except the very center are going to be angled toward the surface). Many other factors also influence how the paint is "layed down" (again not my term) including the distance of the gun to the surface, the rate at which it is moved, the amount of overlap, and how wet it is layed on (a combination of factors including ambient temperature, how "hot" the solvent is- ie evaporation rate, the mixing ratio, spray pattern, and the other factors previously mentioned). While solid colors are MUCH more forgiving, pearlescent colors add another layer (literally) of complexity.

Although fading will definitely make the appearance worse (but in a different way) perceived color differences were noteable on these cars when new. Although undesirable, it is normal. Hope this helps.
